Snow, ice cause four-vehicle crash

The Adams County Sheriff’s Department investigated a four-vehicle chain collision mishap Thursday at 1:39 p.m. that was caused by icy and snowy road conditions on US 27 near Berne.

Police said Joseph J. Brite, 82, Hogans Alley, Decatur, was southbound in his SUV and was slowing down due to a previous slide off because of the icy road conditions. His vehicle was struck in the rear by a car operated by Megan J. Byerly, 18, rural Decatur, The Byerly vehicle was then hit by a pickup truck driven by Keith D. Mazelin, 62, Winterset Lane, Berne, as police said Mazelin was going too fast for existing weather conditions. To conclude the accident, a vehicle behind Mazelin driven by Emilie M. Purdy, 21, Auburn, was able to avoid hitting Mazelin but when she swerved to the west to do so, she struck Byerly’s car and then went into a ditch on the west side of US 27.

No injuries were reported in the accident that resulted in an estimated $25,001-$50,000 in damage to the vehicles. The Berne Police Department assisted at the scene in the investigation.

At 8:46 p.m. Thursday, Sadie N. Gillenwater, 19, Monroeville, was southbound on CR 200 E near CR 800 N in her SUV when she overcorrected due to the road becoming covered with snow and black ice and her vehicle started to slide across the roadway. She entered the east ditch line and struck a fence owned by the Northern Indiana Public Service Company (NIPSCO) that secures a station for gas pumps and lines. The vehicle did not reach the pumps or lines. Between $2,501-$5,000 in damage to the vehicle and NIPSCO property was estimated by police.
