SCHULTZ

13-4 early.

Schultz showed his skill again a few possessions later, taking a pass in the lane, dribbling twice and then nailing a hook shot to put Adams Central up 17-4. It was a far cry from the hard-fought, low-scoring 43-36 victory in the ACAC tournament.

Luke Saylor finally got Heritage going with a nifty 5-0 run with a three and a runner across the lane, but Schultz again had the answer, scoring an old-fashioned threepoint play with 30 seconds left in the first quarter.

Schultz showed his defensive prowess with a big block on the end and Reber went to the line after getting to the bucket in transition.

Heritage started a trend on the final possession of the opening quarter with Kaiser scoring on a putback at the buzzer to cut the lead to 21-14 in a wild opening eight minutes.

The Jets played Saylor, easily the most versatile player for coach Adam Gray’s team, physically, knocking him to the floor and making things difficult for the scorer in the early going.

Schultz’s growth over the past two years was fully demonstrated on one simple play early in the second quarter. He started with the ball as it came across the timeline, then set up a give and go that allowed him to roll into the lane. The junior took the ball seamlessly and laid it in around Kaiser without ever being touched or challenged in what seemed like a split second. At that point, Schultz was nearly halfway to his 30-point night.

Heritage remained in the game midway through the second and cut the lead all the way down to 29-22 before Poling stepped back and drained a three for his only points of the half with 90 seconds to play.

As Kaiser had done for Heritage at the end of the first quarter, Schultz did for the Jets in the second, except Schultz beat the buzzer from behind the arc for his only triple of the game and he went into the locker rooms with 19 points and his team leading 37-25.

When the two teams emerged from the break, it was all Jets as they doubled up Heritage the rest of the way. The impetus for the big second half was back-to-back threes by Reber on the first two possessions. The freshman went on to score 12 in the game.

Reber knocked down his third three of the quarter to once again beat the buzzer, extending the Jets’ lead to 56-31 as the visitors managed just two made buckets in those eight minutes.

From there the game was a glorified scrimmage and Adams Central fed the ball to Poling and he knocked down three more shots to finish with ten on the night and 1,136 in his consistent career. McClure, who led the team with six assists, finished with 12 points and Reber also had a dozen points to go with three steals.

Heritage won the junior varsity game 28-23, dropping the junior Jets to 5-7 on the season. Kolton Littler led AC with 10 points and Lawson Deathe had seven.

Adams Central moved to 6-3 on the year as a C team, beating Heritage 34-33 behind a 19-point night by Drew Johnson, who was 7-8 from the free throw line.
